If we can’t see or sense something does it mean it’s not there? If you answered ‘yes’ then you would also have to believe that TVs, radios, microwaves, and mobile phones all work by magic. I have never seen radio waves or felt them, but to say they don’t exist would be foolish. So much physical reality is beyond our senses. Dogs hear frequencies we can’t; many birds see ultraviolet light; insects sense magnetic fields beyond our perception. There is so much more to reality than what our 5 senses can detect or, for that matter, what science can measure or observe.
In the field of quantum physics scientists have discovered if you break matter into smaller and smaller pieces you eventually reach ‘non-locality’. Past this point everything, including time, disappears into a world that defies scientific explanation. What does all this mean? Our 4-dimensional physical world (which includes time) is not ultimate reality. There is something beyond physics, beyond what science can measure or observe.
A reality beyond the natural is simply the supernatural. Ultimate reality is spiritual. Your life is located in the spiritual realm. Without your spirit your body cannot live, even if it is in perfect physical condition. Your spiritual side is what really matters. We can dye your hair a different colour and give you a new face with plastic surgery but who you are has not changed. We could replace your arms and legs with prosthetic limbs and your heart, kidneys and lungs with machines but it won’t change you into a robot. The real you is spirit and can’t be seen with the human eye or measured by science. Unlike the physical, the spiritual is not subject to time and space. Like it or not, you are an eternal being. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 4:18 ‘For the things which are seen (like our body) are temporary, but the things which are not seen (like our spirit) are eternal’ (Italics mine).
All that is not eternal is eternally out of date. — C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
It’s foolish to fight reality; we must face the fact we are eternal beings. Our spirit, who we really are, will live forever, and deep inside we all know it. Since we are eternal, so are the places we are going. This is where things get serious. Just as there are physical laws that control and direct the physical realm, there is an eternal God who controls and directs the eternal realm. In eternity there are only two places we can be: with God or without God, heaven or hell. Yes, I used the ‘H’ word. I don’t know why people get so offended. Hell is simply a place from which God, the essence of all love and goodness, is totally absent. When all the good is expelled and the only thing left is unrestricted evil, it’s total hell. For the person who wants nothing to do with Jesus Christ, hell is exactly what they asked for. C.S. Lewis said it well. You can either say to God, ‘Your will be done’, or one day He will say to you, ‘Ok, your will be done’. It’s as simple as that. An eternal destiny awaits your decision.
